BLD appoints new partners and counsel


As of January 1, 2022, Thomas Bangen (42), Jendrik Böhmer (33), Ümit Kaplan (50), Jan Kordes (44) as well as Thorsten Süß (37) will join the circle of partners and Klaus Bröcher (43), Dr. Michael Ellerbeck (36), Dr. Michael Marx (50), Michael Rauscher (38) and Karin Schäffer (48) were appointed counsel.

The partnership thus grows to 48 lawyers. 21 Counsel are working at BLD. For Managing Partner Dr. Joachim Grote, this confirms "that the generational change at BLD continues to be very forward-looking, has a positive effect on business development in all service lines and thus consolidates our strong market position. We continue to grow and are pleased that this growth is supported by these colleagues".

The new partners at BLD

Thomas Bangen, LL.M. has been an attorney at BLD in Cologne since 2008. A specialist in insurance law, he practices his advisory and forensic work in the area of property insurance, particularly on issues of recourse. As an expert in his field, he regularly appears as a speaker and presenter at numerous professional events and is regarded nationwide as a valued subrogation expert in property insurance. After being appointed Counsel in 2017, he has now joined the partnership.

Dr. Jendrik Böhmer, LL.M. joined BLD in Cologne in 2017 as a lawyer in the industrial liability department. Since then, he has assisted in numerous complex industrial and product liability lawsuits and also advises and represents clients on issues of recall cost insurance, IT liability and tech E&O insurance. In 2015, he received his doctorate in insurance supervisory law from the University of Münster and completed his master's degree (LL.M.) in insurance law in parallel. As an industry-experienced specialist, he has made a name for himself as an author and lecturer at the University of Münster for business and product liability insurance.

Ümit Kaplan has worked as a lawyer and insurance law specialist at BLD in Berlin since 2012 and heads the liability department there. As a proven industry expert, he conducts liability and coverage law litigation, primarily in the areas of private and commercial liability as well as construction and architect liability. He is a sought-after speaker by clients for in-house and continuing education events.

Jan Kordes, LL.M. has been advising and representing clients as a member of the Financial Lines department in Cologne since 2013, particularly in the areas of D&O insurance and directors' and officers' liability. As a specialist lawyer for insurance law, he successfully accompanies in particular national and international directors' and officers' liability cases in insolvency. As a proven expert at the interface of insolvency and liability law, he was Counsel at BLD since 2019 before now being appointed Partner.

Dr. Thorsten Süß is a specialist attorney for medical law. He has been assisting his clients at BLD in Cologne since 2016, primarily in claims in the areas of medical liability, medical criminal law and nursing liability. In 2011, Dr. Süß completed his doctorate at the University of Münster before moving to Hamm in 2013 to join a law firm specializing in insurance and medical law. He has established himself as an expert in liability law in the healthcare sector who is highly regarded by clients and has also made a name for himself through specialist lectures, publications and teaching activities at universities in Münster and Bremen, among other places.

The new counsel at BLD

Klaus Bröcher is a specialist lawyer for construction and architectural law and supports numerous clients with qualified advice very successfully in the field of liability insurance with a focus on construction and architects' liability. Prior to re-joining BLD Klaus has been working in the claims department of a large international insurance company.

Dr. Michael Ellerbeck has been advising national and international insurers as a lawyer at BLD in Munich since 2014 with a high level of expertise in construction and architects' liability as well as in the areas of professional and general liability. He is also a specialist lawyer for transport law.

Dr. Michael Marx, LL.M. (Cape Town) has many years of expertise as a lawyer in insurance law, particularly in the context of D&O insurance, industrial insurance and as well as international claims. After obtaining his doctorate in insurance law, he worked for an international law firm for five years before joining BLD's Frankfurt office in 2012.

Michael Rauscher has been working at the Munich office in the area of personal insurance since 2013. The specialist lawyer for insurance law as well as for medical law brings his great expertise from several years of working in a commercial law firm as well as an in-house lawyer at a personal insurer to his advisory and forensic work, focusing on issues of private health and disability insurance, and is responsible at the office in particular for proceedings on the effectiveness of premium adjustments.

Karin Schäffer has been advising international and national insurers in product liability and other major loss cases in Munich since 2017. Having previously worked in the general liability department at BLD for eight years, Karin manages both out-of-court and court proceedings in Germany on behalf of foreign insurers as well as abroad on behalf of German insurers, the latter in close coordination with our international partners.
