Dr Martin Schaaf is a lawyer and partner at the Cologne office. He is a Specialist Insurance Lawyer and leads the Life & Regulatory department with Dr Alexander Beyer and Dr Tobias Britz. His focus is on advising on complex insurance regulation issues, in all lines of personal insurance and across the board in product development and consulting as well as reinsurance. As one of the leading advisors in his field, he offers our clients not only extensive legal expertise, but also a well-founded understanding of business and accounting. When it comes to advice concerning insurance (regulatory) law and the design of new products, his clients, which also include various insurtechs and insurers, appreciate in particular the creativity and innovative ideas he brings to cases. In recent years, Dr Martin Schaaf has advised life insurers and other clients on navigating the low-interest environment as well as insurers from various lines of business on the design of new insurance products, including the development of parametric insurance products. Dr Martin Schaaf also focusses on reinsurance, namely financial reinsurance in the life insurance sector, and has provided regulatory advice on numerous portfolio transfers and conversions.
